Every drop counts began when my friend Jaak Monbaliu asked me to compose and perform a piece in honor of Jean Berlamont, retiring full professor at KU Leuven and world authority in hydraulic engineering.

The piece is based on a two note theme evoking water, in which H2 and O are denoted by La and Sol#, respectively. A mathematically rigorous and expressive polyphonic texture emerges from using imitative counterpoint with suspended chords to represent their covalent bond. Twice La signals H2 and once Sol# signals O.
